“The Ham Trick” campaign returns with almost 300 cooking fat collection points

Fats from Christmas dishes will be recycled and processed into renewable diesel again this year. Finnish Packaging Recycling RINKI is involved in a joint project that encourages Finns to recycle household cooking fats.

Cooking fats will be collected from 17 December 2021 until 7 January 2022.

The Ham Trick collection has been made easy for consumers: fat that has cooled down is poured into an empty liquid carton, the package is sealed with tape and taken to the nearest collection point.

There are almost 300 collection points across Finland. Most of them are located next to the Rinki eco take-back points at K-supermarkets. You can easily find your nearest collection point on the map search on the Ham Trick website.

It is worth recycling cooking fats from ham, turkey, fish and vegetables: for example, the fat from one medium-sized (7 kg) ham makes enough renewable diesel to drive for three kilometres. Finnish people eat around seven million kilograms of ham at Christmas every year.
